As a part of my Ayurdoula training (with Inner Sun and Moon), I get to play around with the most magical recipes. Shata dhauta ghrita, or One Hundred Times Washed Ghee is possibly the most magical of those.

Washed ghee is made by placing ghee into a vessel and mixing it with purified water, washing it, then the water is poured away and this is done literally one hundred times. The result is a complete transformation of the ghee to an odourless cream of whipped butter consistency that is an excellent anti-aging treatment that smooths wrinkles, fades sun spots, heals burns, and soothes inflammation of rosacea, eczema, and acne.

Ghee in itself is prized in Ayurveda for its ability to penetrate all seven tissue layers (along with sesame oil) and therefore considered to have a medicinal effect on skin. However, used in itself, the pH of ghee is not right for the skin. But what happens when we wash ghee with pure water is that the transformation (samskara) of the ghee results in a highly absorbent cream with a perfectly neutral pH, making it ideal for nourishing facial skin.

We use only local, grass fed, organic butter from Paris Creek’s Biodynamic farm to make our ghee and it is washed 100 times with pure water infused with rose quartz crystals and sacred Sanskrit mantras using a copper utensil for extra antioxidant and healing properties. It is a medicinal preparation that deeply nourishes the skin and can be used as a daily moisturiser or night cream. It is also beautiful for stretch marks and scar treatment, cooling for perineal healing and makes a divine gift for a mama or mama-to-be.
